Annotation of Alma 37 – preliminary
Alma 37 is a good example because it shows that a high percentage of Book of Mormon language is also KJV language. Few of the KJV words/phrases are not also found in Edwards, including the so-called "blended" passages.
The blue Book of Mormon words/phrases in the annotation are nonbiblical and also not found in Edwards. In some cases noted below, the nonbiblical language is close to Edwards (e.g., plural instead of singular). There are several examples in the Book of Mormon of paraphrased or misquoted passages from the KJV that are identical to paraphrased or misquoted KJV passages in Edwards' works.
The red words/phrases are nonbiblical Book of Mormon wording that are also found in Edwards' works as available on the Yale database, which includes most but not all of the 1808 edition, as well as material not included in the 1808 edition.
Purple are nonbiblical Book of Mormon words/phrases similar to Edwards.
Naturally, Edwards is not the only person who ever used this nonbiblical Book of Mormon terminology. English is a common language or we couldn't understand one another. But the ready availability of Edwards' works in Palmyra during Joseph's youth indicates that Edwards was a possible source for Joseph's vocabulary that he used when translating the plates.

Chapter 37
The plates of brass and other scriptures are preserved to bring souls to salvation—The Jaredites were destroyed because of their wickedness—Their secret oaths and covenants must be kept from the people—Counsel with the Lord in all your doings—As the Liahona guided the Nephites, so the word of Christ leads men to eternal life. About 74 B.C.
And now, my son Helaman, I command you that ye take the records[1] which have been entrusted[2] with me;
And I also command you that ye keep a record[3] of this people, according as I have done, upon the plates of Nephi, and keep all these things sacred which I have kept, even as I have kept them; for it is for a wise purpose[4] that they are kept.
And these plates of brass, which contain these engravings[5], which have the records of the holy scriptures[6] upon them, which have the genealogy of our forefathers, even from the beginning—
Behold, it has been prophesied by our fathers, that they should be kept and handed down[7] from one generation[8] to another, and be kept and preserved[9] by the hand of the Lord[10] until they should go forth[11] unto every nation, kindred[12], tongue, and people, that they shall know of the mysteries[13] contained thereon.
And now behold, if they are kept they must retain[14] their brightness[15]; yea, and they will retain their brightness; yea, and also shall all the plates which do contain that which is holy writ[16].
Now ye may suppose[17] that this is foolishness[18] in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple[19] things are great things[20] brought to pass; and small means[21] in many instances[22] doth confound the wise[23].
And the Lord God doth work by means[24] to bring about[25] his great and eternal[26] purposes[27]; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls[28].
And now, it has hitherto been wisdom in God[29] that these things should be preserved; for behold, they have enlarged[30] the memory of this people, yea, and convinced many of the error of[31] their ways, and brought them to[32] the knowledge of their God[33] unto the salvation of their souls.
Yea, I say unto you, were it not for[34] these things that these records do contain, which are on these plates, Ammon and his brethren could not have convinced[35] so[36] many thousands[37] of the Lamanites of the incorrect[38] tradition of their fathers[39]; yea, these records and their words brought them unto repentance; that is, they brought them to the knowledge of the Lord their God, and to rejoice in Jesus Christ[40] their Redeemer.
And who knoweth but what they will be the means of bringing many thousands of them, yea, and also many thousands of our stiffnecked[41] brethren, the Nephites, who are now hardening their hearts[42] in sin and iniquities[43], to the knowledge of their Redeemer[44]?
Now these mysteries are not yet fully[45] made known[46] unto me; therefore I shall forbear[47].
And it may suffice[48] if I only say they are preserved for a wise purpose, which purpose is known unto God; for he doth counsel in wisdom[49] over all his works[50], and his paths are straight[51], and his course is one eternal round[52].
O remember, remember[53], my son Helaman, how strict[54] are the commandments of God[55]. And he said: If ye will keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land[56]—but if ye keep not his commandments ye shall be cut off from his presence[57].
And now remember[58], my son, that God has entrusted[59] you with these things, which are sacred, which he has kept sacred, and also which he will keep and preserve for a wise purpose in him, that he may show forth his power[60] unto future generations[61].
And now behold, I tell you by the spirit of prophecy[62], that if ye transgress[63] the commandments of God, behold, these things which are sacred shall be taken away from you by the power of God[64], and ye shall be delivered up[65] unto Satan, that he may sift you[66] as chaff[67] before the wind.
But if ye keep the commandments of God, and do with these things which are sacred according to that which the Lord doth command you, (for you must appeal[68] unto the Lord for all things whatsoever ye must do with them) behold, no power of earth[69] or hell can take them from you, for God is powerful[70] to the fulfilling of all his words.
For he will fulfil all his promises which he shall make unto you, for he has fulfilled his promises[71] which he has made unto our fathers.
For he promised unto them that he would preserve these things for a wise purpose in him, that he might show forth his power unto future generations.
And now behold, one purpose[72] hath he fulfilled, even to the restoration of[73] many thousands of the Lamanites to the knowledge of the truth[74]; and he hath shown forth his power in them, and he will also still show forth his power in them unto future generations; therefore they shall be preserved.
Therefore I command you, my son Helaman, that ye be diligent[75] in fulfilling all my words, and that ye be diligent in keeping the commandments of God as they are written[76].
And now, I will speak unto you concerning those twenty-four plates, that ye keep them, that the mysteries and the works of darkness[77], and their secret works[78], or the secret works of those people who have been destroyed, may be made manifest unto this people; yea, all their murders, and robbings, and their plunderings, and all their wickedness and abominations[79], may be made manifest unto this people; yea, and that ye preserve these interpreters [“directors” in 1830].
For behold, the Lord saw that his people began to work in darkness[80], yea, work secret murders[81] and abominations; therefore the Lord said, if they did not repent they should be destroyed from off the face of the earth[82].
And the Lord said: I will prepare unto my servant Gazelem, a stone, which shall shine forth[83] in darkness unto light[84], that I may discover unto[85] my people who serve me, that I may discover unto them the works of their brethren, yea, their secret works, their works of darkness, and their wickedness and abominations.
And now, my son, these interpreters [“directors” in 1830] were prepared that the word of God might be fulfilled, which he spake, saying:
I will bring forth[86] out of darkness[87] unto light all their secret works and their abominations; and except they repent I will destroy them from off the face of the earth; and I will bring to light[88] all their secrets and abominations[89], unto every nation that shall hereafter possess the land.
And now, my son, we see that they did not repent; therefore they have been destroyed, and thus far the word of God has been fulfilled; yea, their secret abominations[90] have been brought out of darkness[91] and made known unto us.
And now, my son, I command you that ye retain all their oaths, and their covenants, and their agreements in their secret abominations; yea, and all their signs and their wonders ye shall keep from this people, that they know them not, lest peradventure[92] they should fall into darkness also and be destroyed.
For behold, there is a curse upon all this land, that destruction shall come upon all those workers of darkness[93], according to the power of God, when they are fully ripe[94]; therefore I desire that this people might not be destroyed.
Therefore ye shall keep these secret plans[95] of their oaths and their covenants from this people, and only their wickedness and their murders and their abominations shall ye make known unto them; and ye shall teach them to abhor[96] such wickedness and abominations and murders; and ye shall also teach them that these people were destroyed on account of[97] their wickedness and abominations and their murders.
For behold, they murdered all the prophets of the Lord[98] who came among them to declare unto them concerning their iniquities[99]; and the blood of those whom they murdered did cry unto the Lord their God for vengeance[100] upon those who were their murderers; and thus the judgments of God[101] did come upon these workers of darkness and secret combinations.
Yea, and cursed be the land forever and ever unto those workers of darkness and secret combinations, even unto destruction, except they repent before they are fully ripe.
And now, my son, remember the words which I have spoken unto you; trust not those secret plans unto this people, but teach them an everlasting hatred[102] against sin[103] and iniquity.
Preach unto them repentance, and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ; teach them to humble themselves and to be meek and lowly in heart; teach them to withstand every temptation of the devil, with their faith on the Lord Jesus Christ.
Teach them to never be weary of[104] good works[105], but to be meek and lowly[106] in heart; for such shall find rest[107] to their souls.
O, remember, my son, and learn wisdom[108] in thy youth; yea, learn in thy youth to keep the commandments of God.
Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed[109] unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of[110] thy heart be placed upon[111] the Lord forever.
Counsel with[112] the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct[113] thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you[114] in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks[115] unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day[116].
And now, my son, I have somewhat to say[117] concerning the thing which our fathers call a ball, or director—or our fathers called it Liahona, which is, being interpreted[118], a compass[119]; and the Lord prepared it.
And behold, there cannot any man work after the manner of so curious[120] a workmanship[121][122]. And behold, it was prepared to show unto our fathers the course which they should travel in the wilderness[123].
And it did work for them according to their faith[124] in God; therefore, if they had faith to believe[125] that God could cause that those spindles should point the way[126] they should go, behold, it was done; therefore they had this miracle, and also many other miracles wrought by the power of God, day by day.
Nevertheless, because those miracles were worked by small means it did show unto them marvelous works[127]. They were slothful[128], and forgot to exercise their faith[129] and diligence and then those marvelous works ceased, and they did not progress[130] in their journey[131];
Therefore, they tarried[132] in the wilderness[133], or did not travel[134] a direct course[135], and were afflicted with hunger[136] and thirst, because of their transgressions[137].
And now, my son, I would that[138] ye should[139] understand that these things are not without a shadow[140]; for as our fathers were slothful to give heed[141] to this compass (now these things were temporal[142]) they did not prosper[143]; even so it is[144] with things which are spiritual[145].
For behold, it is as easy[146] to give heed to the word of Christ[147], which will point to you[148] a straight course[149] to eternal bliss[150], as it was for our fathers to give heed to this compass, which would point unto them a straight course to the promised land[151].
And now I say, is there not[152] a type[153] in this thing? For just as surely as[154] this director did bring our fathers, by following its course[155], to the promised land, shall the words of Christ[156], if we follow their course, carry us beyond[157] this vale[158] of sorrow[159] into a far better[160] land of promise[161].
O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness[162] of the way; for so was it[163] with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would look they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared[164], and if we will look[165] we may[166] live forever[167].
And now, my son, see that ye take care of[168] these sacred things[169], yea, see that ye look to God[170] and live. Go unto this people and declare the word[171], and be sober[172]. My son, farewell.

[3] BM (2) JE (4) JE: (1808) “To object against a book's being divine merely because it is historical is a silly objection, just as if that could not be the word of God that gives us an account of what is past, or as though it was not reasonable to suppose that God, in a revelation he should give mankind, would go to give us any relation of the dispensations of his own providence. If it be so, it must be because his works are not worthy that he should tell us what they are. It must be because the scheme of his government and series of his dispensations towards his church and towards the world that he has made, whereby he has ordered and disposed it from age to age, is not worthy that any record should be kept of it.
The objection that is made, that it is a common thing for nations and kingdoms to write histories and keep records of their wars and the revolutions that come to pass in their territories, is so far from being a weighty objection against the historical parts of Scripture being the word of God that it is a strong argument. For if reason and the light of nature teaches all civilized nations to keep records of the events of their human government, and the facts of their administrations, and to publish histories for the information of others, how much more may we expect that God gives the world a record of the dispensations of his divine government that doubtless is infinitely more worthy of an history for our information. If wise kings have taken care that there should be good histories written of the nations over which they have reigned, shall we think it incredible that Jesus Christ would take care that his church, which is his nation, his peculiar people, should have in their hands a certain infallible history of their nation and his government of them?”

[169] BM (4) DC (6) JE (30) JE : (1808) « will any suppose, that texts of Scripture are such sacred things , that the devil durst not abuse them, nor touch them? In this also they are mistaken.” Other JE: “It was so common a thing for the prophets to typify things that were the subjects of their prophecies by divine appointment, that the false prophets imitated 'em in it and were wont to feign directions from God to typify the subjects of their false prophecies. (See 1 Kings 22:11 and Jeremiah 28:10.) Things in common use among the Israelites were spoken of by the Spirit of God as types. Thus the vine tree is spoken of, more especially of God's visible people (Ezekiel 15). It being so much God's manner from the beginning of the world to represent divine things by types, hence it probably came to pass that typical representations were looked upon by the ancient nations— the Egyptians in particular— as sacred things, and therefore called "hieroglyphics," which is a word that signifies as much as "sacred images," or "representations."”
