Annotation of Alma 34 – preliminary
Alma 34 is a good example because it shows that a high percentage of Book of Mormon language is also KJV language. Few of the KJV words/phrases are not also found in Edwards, including the so-called "blended" passages.
The blue Book of Mormon words/phrases in the annotation are nonbiblical and also not found in Edwards. In some cases noted below, the nonbiblical language is close to Edwards (e.g., plural instead of singular). There are several examples in the Book of Mormon of paraphrased or misquoted passages from the KJV that are identical to paraphrased or misquoted KJV passages in Edwards' works.
The red words/phrases are nonbiblical Book of Mormon wording that are also found in Edwards' works as available on the Yale database, which includes most but not all of the 1808 edition, as well as material not included in the 1808 edition.
Purple are nonbiblical Book of Mormon words/phrases similar to Edwards.
Naturally, Edwards is not the only person who ever used this nonbiblical Book of Mormon terminology. English is a common language or we couldn't understand one another. But the ready availability of Edwards' works in Palmyra during Joseph's youth indicates that Edwards was a possible source for Joseph's vocabulary that he used when translating the plates.

Chapter 34
Amulek testifies that the word is in Christ unto salvation—Unless an atonement is made, all mankind must perish—The whole law of Moses points toward the sacrifice of the Son of God—The eternal plan of redemption is based on faith and repentance—Pray for temporal and spiritual blessings—This life is the time for men to prepare to meet God—Work out your salvation with fear before God. About 74 B.C.
And now it came to pass that after Alma had spoken these words unto them he sat down upon the ground, and Amulek arose and began to teach them, saying:
My brethren, I think that it is impossible[1] that ye should be ignorant[2] of the things which have been spoken concerning[3] the coming of Christ[4], who is taught by us to be the Son of God; yea, I know that these things were taught unto you bountifully[5] before your dissension[6] from among us.
And as ye have desired[7] of[8] my beloved brother that he should make known[9] unto you what ye should do, because of[10] your afflictions[11]; and he hath spoken somewhat[12] unto you to prepare your minds[13]; yea, and he hath exhorted you[14] unto faith and to patience—
Yea, even that ye would have so[15] much faith[16] as even to plant the word[17] in your hearts, that ye may try the[18] experiment[19] of its goodness[20].
And we have beheld that the great question[21] which is in your minds[22] is whether the word be[23] in the Son of God, or whether there shall be no Christ.
And ye also beheld that my brother has proved[24] unto you, in many instances[25], that the word is in Christ[26] unto salvation.
My brother has called upon the words of Zenos, that redemption cometh through the Son of God[27], and also upon the words of Zenock; and also he has appealed[28] unto Moses, to prove that[29] these things are true[30].
And now, behold, I will testify[31] unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know[32] that Christ shall come[33] among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of[34] his people[35], and that he shall atone for[36] the sins of the world[37]; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
For it is expedient[38] that an atonement should be made[39]; for according to the great plan[40] of the Eternal God[41] there must be an atonement made[42], or else all[43] mankind must[44] unavoidably[45] perish[46]; yea, all are[47] hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish[48] except it be[49] through the atonement[50] which it is expedient should be made.
For it is expedient that there should be a great and last[51] sacrifice; yea, not a sacrifice of man[52], neither of beast, neither of any manner of fowl; for it shall not be a human sacrifice[53]; but it must be an infinite and eternal[54] sacrifice.
Now there is not any man[55] that can sacrifice his own blood[56] which will atone for the sins of another[57]. Now, if a man murdereth, behold will our law, which is just[58], take the life of[59] his brother? I say unto you, Nay.
But the law requireth the life of him who hath murdered; therefore there can be nothing[60] which is short of[61] an infinite atonement[62] which will suffice[63] for the sins of the world.
Therefore, it is expedient that there should be[64] a great and last sacrifice, and then shall there be, or it is expedient there should be, a stop to[65] the shedding of blood[66]; then shall the law of Moses be fulfilled[67]; yea, it shall be all fulfilled[68], every jot and tittle[69], and none shall have passed away[70].
And behold, this is the whole[71] meaning[72] of the law, every whit[73] pointing[74] to that great and last sacrifice; and that great and last sacrifice will be the Son of God, yea, infinite and eternal.
And thus he shall bring salvation[75] to all those who shall believe on his name[76]; this being[77] the intent of[78] this last sacrifice[79], to bring about[80] the bowels of[81] mercy, which overpowereth[82] justice, and bringeth about means[83] unto men that they may have faith[84] unto repentance.
And thus mercy can satisfy[85] the demands of[86] justice, and encircles them in the arms of[87] safety, while he that exercises no faith unto[88] repentance[89] is exposed to[90] the whole law[91] of the demands of justice[92]; therefore only unto him that has faith unto repentance is brought about[93] the great and eternal[94] plan of redemption[95].
Therefore may God grant unto you, my brethren, that ye may begin to exercise[96] your faith unto repentance, that ye begin to call[97] upon his holy name, that he would have mercy upon you;
Yea, cry unto him[98] for mercy; for he is mighty to save[99].
Yea, humble yourselves[100], and continue in prayer unto him.
Cry unto him when ye are in your fields, yea, over all your flocks.
Cry unto him in your houses, yea, over all your household, both morning, mid-day, and evening.
Yea, cry unto him against the power[101] of your enemies.
Yea, cry unto him against the devil[102], who is an enemy to all righteousness[103].
Cry unto him over the crops of your fields, that ye may prosper[104] in them.
Cry over the flocks of your fields, that they may increase[105].
But this is not all[106]; ye must pour out[107] your souls in your closets[108], and your secret places[109], and in your wilderness.
Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord[110], let your hearts be full[111], drawn out[112] in prayer unto him continually for your[113] welfare[114], and also for the welfare of those who are around you[115].
And now behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, do not suppose[116] that this is all[117]; for after ye have done all these things[118], if ye turn away the needy[119], and the naked, and visit not the sick and afflicted[120], and impart of[121] your substance[122], if ye have, to those who stand in need[123]—I say unto you, if ye do not any of these things, behold, your prayer is vain[124], and availeth you nothing, and ye are as hypocrites[125] who do deny the faith[126].
Therefore, if ye do not remember to be[127] charitable, ye are as dross[128], which the refiners[129] do cast out, (it being of[130] no worth[131]) and is trodden under foot[132] of men.
And now, my brethren, I would that, after ye have received so many witnesses[133], seeing that the holy scriptures[134] testify of these things[135], ye come forth and bring fruit[136] unto repentance.
Yea, I would that ye would come forth and harden not[137] your hearts any longer[138]; for behold, now is the time[139] and the day of your salvation[140]; and therefore, if ye will repent[141] and harden not your hearts, immediately shall[142] the great plan of redemption be brought about unto you.
For behold, this life[143] is the time for men to prepare to meet[144] God; yea, behold the day of this life[145] is the day for men to perform their labors[146].
And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate[147] the day of your repentance[148] until the end; for after this day of life[149], which is given us to prepare for eternity[150], behold, if we do not improve[151] our time[152] while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness[153] wherein there can be no labor performed[154].
Ye cannot say[155], when ye are brought[156] to that awful[157] crisis[158], that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit[159] which doth possess your bodies[160] at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess[161] your body[162] in that eternal world[163].
For behold, if ye have procrastinated[164] the day of your repentance even until death[165], behold, ye have become subjected[166] to the spirit of the devil[167], and he doth seal you his[168]; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you[169], and hath no place in you[170], and the devil hath all power over[171] you; and this is the final state[172] of the wicked.
And this I know, because the Lord hath said he dwelleth not in unholy temples[173], but in the hearts of the righteous[174] doth he dwell; yea, and he has also said that the righteous shall sit down[175] in his kingdom, to go no more out[176]; but their garments should[177] be made white[178] through the blood of the Lamb[179].
And now, my beloved brethren, I desire that[180] ye should remember these things, and that ye should work out[181] your salvation with fear[182] before God, and that ye should no more deny[183] the coming of Christ;
That ye contend no more[184] against the Holy Ghost[185], but that ye receive it, and take upon you[186][187] the name of Christ[188]; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust[189], and worship God[190], in whatsoever place[191] ye may be in, in spirit and in truth[192]; and that ye live in thanksgiving[193] daily, for the many mercies[194] and blessings[195] which he doth bestow upon you[196].
Yea, and I also exhort you, my brethren, that ye be watchful[197] unto prayer continually[198], that ye may not be led away by[199] the temptations of the devil[200], that he may not overpower[201] you, that ye may not become his subjects[202] at the last day[203]; for behold, he rewardeth you no good thing[204].
And now my beloved brethren, I would exhort you to have patience[205], and that ye bear with[206] all manner of afflictions[207]; that ye do not revile[208] against those who do cast you out because of your exceeding poverty[209], lest ye become sinners[210] like unto them[211];
But that ye have patience[212], and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope[213] that ye shall one day rest[214] from all your afflictions.
